Double Dip the Savings with RBC and Petro-Canada
This post is sponsored by RBC and Petro-Canada. All expressed opinions and experiences are my own words.
In the classic Seinfeld episode, The Implant, George Costanza gets into an argument at a funeral reception with his girlfriend’s brother, Timmy, when accused of double dipping a chip.
“Did you just double-dip that chip?”
“Excuse me?”
“You double-dipped the chip.”
“Double-dipped? What are you talking about?”
“You dipped the chip, you took a bite, and you dipped again.”
“So?”
“That’s like putting your whole mouth right in the dip. Look, from now on when you take a chip, just take one dip and end it.”
“Well, I’m sorry Timmy, but I don’t dip that way.”
“Oh, you don’t, huh?”
“No. You dip the way you want to dip, I’ll dip the way I want to dip.”
– Timmy and George, in “The Implant”
I can be a lot like George when it comes to earning rewards – I’m always looking to double dip and put more money in my wallet. That means using a rewards credit card to make purchases at a retailer that is also linked to that program. It’s a powerful strategy that helps me earn rewards points faster and save money on everyday purchases.
A great example is when you fill up at the gas pump. Pay with your rewards card and you’ll likely earn anywhere from 1 to 4 percent on your purchase. Then swipe your gas station rewards card to earn an additional fuel discount or rewards points to use later. That’s double-dipping at its finest – Costanza would be proud!
That’s why I was excited to learn that, starting on October 31, 2017, RBC clients will be able to link their Petro-Points card to any RBC debit or credit card to instantly save 3¢ per litre on fuel, and earn 20 percent more Petro-Points on purchases made at Petro-Canada.
RBC Rewards credit card holders will also earn 20 percent more RBC Rewards points on their Petro-Canada purchases.
Why do I like double dipping? Well, it’s easy and convenient to save at the pump AND earn bonus points. What’s unique about this partnership between RBC and Petro-Canada is that, unlike other loyalty programs where the benefits are limited to a specific card, you can use any linked RBC card in your wallet to save instantly on fuel and earn more points.
In this case, clients simply need to choose the RBC debit or credit cards that fit their needs, and link their Petro-Points card to their RBC profile online once at rbc.com/petro-canada. Then they simply need to pay with any RBC card (credit or debit) at Petro-Canada to instantly save 3¢ per litre on fuel and earn bonus Petro-Points. RBC Rewards cardholders will also earn 20% more RBC Rewards points on Petro-Canada purchases.
Let’s take a look and compare one regular customer filling up a 65-litre gas tank at a Petro-Canada station in Toronto (average price of $1.059/litre) with one RBC customer filling up the same sized tank at the same Petro-Canada station and paying with his or her RBC Rewards credit card:
Cost $ | RBC Rewards earned
(per dollar spent) |
Petro-Points earned (per litre pumped) | |
Regular fill-up | $68.84 | 68 (base points) | 650 (base points) |
RBC client fill-up | $66.89 | 67 (base points) +
13 bonus points = 80 |
650 (base points) + 130 (bonus points) = 780 |
Wait a minute – wait just a darn minute! Did you see that? It’s actually a triple dip! Save a couple of bucks instantly at the pump, plus earn bonus RBC Rewards points AND bonus Petro-Points. The trifecta!
RBC clients make sure to visit rbc.com/petro-canada on or after October 31st to link up your Petro-Points card to your RBC online profile. Clients should allow two business days to start receiving instant fuel savings and bonus points.
With apologies to the Timmy’s of the world, the savings are just too good here to pass up an extra dip.
